From Site Visits to Garden Parties: A Day in the Life of a Graduate Surveyor

I joined Vickery Holman in September 2023 and currently work as a General Practice Surveyor in the Truro office, pursuing the Commercial Real Estate pathway for my RICS APC. Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to work across a diverse range of commercial properties, including retail units, industrial estates, development sites, and hotels, as well as advising clients on lease advisory and business rates matters.

No two days are the same, which is something I really enjoy about the role. I usually start my day by checking emails and planning out my tasks; whether that’s preparing reports, heading out on site for inspections, or meeting with clients and colleagues. The variation of work across Cornwall makes each day unique and keeps things interesting.

At the moment, I’m working toward my APC and gaining the relevant experience through a combination of lease advisory and business rates work. This has allowed me to develop a strong foundation in valuation principles, client communication, and the complexities of rent reviews, lease renewals, and rating appeals. It’s been challenging, but I’ve learnt so much in a short amount of time.

Vickery Holman has been incredibly supportive, not just in helping me develop the technical skills needed for my APC, but also in building my confidence and professional presence. Before joining, I hadn’t done much networking and found it quite daunting. But thanks to the guidance and encouragement of my colleagues, I’ve developed strong relationships across the industry and now even help with organising and running events.

Recently, I had the privilege of organising our Annual Garden Party, which was a fantastic opportunity to bring clients and colleagues together in a more informal setting. I was also recently promoted to Marketing Coordinator for the office, a role that allows me to get involved with budgeting, event planning and communications, alongside my surveying work.

Even though I’m still a graduate, I’ve been trusted with real responsibility and supported every step of the way. I feel incredibly privileged to be learning from my managers, who are among the most knowledgeable in the area. Their experience and guidance have been invaluable to my development, and I’m constantly learning through their mentorship and example.

Being part of a friendly and experienced team has made a huge difference to both my confidence and career development. I’m excited to continue learning, progress with my APC and take on new challenges as I grow with the business.
