I joined Vickery Holman’s Bristol office in September 2024, shortly after completing my undergraduate degree in Real Estate at the University of the West of England. It was during my time at university that my passion for the property industry truly took shape, laying the foundation for my journey into the profession. Given the competitiveness of the graduate job market and my lack of prior industry experience, I was especially grateful to Vickery Holman for recognising my potential and giving me the opportunity to prove myself and begin my career in the property sector—supporting my ambition to pass the APC and become a Chartered Surveyor.
Starting as part of the Valuation team, the support I’ve received from both my immediate valuation colleagues and the wider office has exceeded all expectations. From day one, I was actively involved—accompanying colleagues on inspections of a wide range of commercial and residential properties. Each team member brings a unique perspective and valuable insight, which has given me exposure to diverse scenarios and significantly enhanced my learning experience. A key part of this support has come from our Head of Valuation, whose leadership, expertise, and approachability have created an encouraging environment for learning and development.
One of the most surprising and rewarding aspects of the role has been realising just how varied property valuations can be. No two are ever the same, with each requiring different purposes, methodologies, and approaches. Across Bristol and the wider Southwest region, we undertake a broad spectrum of valuation instructions, including Loan Security Valuations, Pension Valuations, and Probate Valuations. This variety not only keeps the work dynamic and engaging but also contributes to a well-rounded understanding of valuation principles and the diverse needs of clients. These differences are also reflected in the valuation methods we apply—ranging from income, market, and cost-based approaches—which I first encountered during my valuation module at university. It’s incredibly rewarding to now put those concepts into practice in real-world scenarios.
The support from the company as a whole has been exceptional. Vickery Holman has a clear vision and strategic direction, which is inspiring to be part of. This is communicated effectively through regular company days held throughout the year—always paired with enjoyable team-building activities that foster a strong sense of community. In terms of APC preparation, we’re fortunate to have guidance from a designated mentor, who goes above and beyond to support graduates through what can be a challenging and sometimes daunting process.
Overall, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Vickery Holman and look forward to continuing my learning and growth within the company, with the ultimate goal of earning my MRICS designation.
