Can’t believe it’s been one year since I joined Vickery Holman in May of last year! Whilst there has been plenty to learn, there is always plenty of help and guidance from members of our team, not just in the building surveying department but across the board. I am now 10 months into my APC, which Vickery Holman are supporting me with. Becoming a chartered surveyor is definitely a process which should be self-led, and this is an expectation within the company.
A standard day can include attending dilapidation, schedule of conditions or reinstatement assessment surveys, designing internal layouts for refurbishments or planning applications. Vickery Holman provide contract administration for new build or refurbishment projects, two of which I am currently overseeing. One for an office refurbishment in a modern building in Plymouth and the other on a grade one listed building in Launceston.
Often my role will be to work along side one of the senior surveyors on larger projects, which is a great opportunity to gain experience and understanding of the many disciplines a competent surveyor should know.
Thankfully we also have a sociable bunch at VH, both inside and outside of work. RICS events are always well attended. Another bonus is there is often a sweet treat courtesy of a member of staff to enjoy with your morning coffee.
