As I write this blog entry I have been an employee of Vickery Holman for exactly eight weeks. What has life been like settling in? Manic- in a good way! Traveling from Wells to Exeter is not your average commute, however it is certainly worth it once you are parked up! I already had experience of working as a surveyor, and Vickery Holman were quick to put this to the test, having me assist many of the valuers with comparable searches and accompanying them on inspections in my first week. There are far more staff in VH than in my previous firm and this is great as there is always someone you can learn something from. We recently had our department meeting, which was a valuable day of hearing reports from the valuation, rating, landlord and tenant and development teams, as well as meeting other employees from the Plymouth and Truro offices. I was given the task of presenting a researched topic, which helped me develop my confidence in the area.

I have attended lots of professional development seminars and networking events in the last two months, sometimes on my own, but more commonly with my colleagues from the Exeter and Bristol offices. My favourites so far include the Property Law Update held in Bristol (where people had to park on the grass as it was so popular) and the recent Women in Property/Bristol Property Agents Association party. The photo shows me on the middle right.

I have had advice and support regarding the APC process too and I have changed the pathway I am following since my last position. I am now confident that I have the right selection of competencies to become the surveyor I want to be. Looking forward, I will be based in Bristol a little more in the new year and I am looking forward to expanding my network there, as well as continuing my work and training in landlord & tenant, business rates and valuation.
